Project H.O.M.E.

The mission of Project H.O.M.E. is to empower persons to break the cycle of homelessness and poverty, to address structural causes of poverty, and to enable all of us to attain our fullest potential as individuals and as members of the broader society. We achieve this by providing a continuum of care, comprised of street outreach; supportive housing facilities; and comprehensive services including health care, education, and employment. We also address the root causes of homelessness through neighborhood revitalization programs, including affordable housing development; employment training and opportunities; adult and youth education; health care; and environmental enhancement. Project H.O.M.E. strives to create a stable and secure environment where we support each other in our struggles for self-esteem, recovery, and the confidence to move toward self-actualization. The work of Project H.O.M.E. is rooted in our strong spiritual conviction of the dignity of each person. We believe that all persons are entitled to decent, affordable housing and access to quality education, employment, and health care.

Since 1989, Project H.O.M.E. has worked to fulfill this mission through: creating Housing and Economic Development; providing Opportunities for Employment; and offering Medical Care and Education. Below are some of Project H.O.M.E.’s accomplishments in these areas:

Housing and Economic Development

▪ We have developed 447 units of housing in Philadelphia including 274 units of supportive housing for formerly homeless men, women, and families and 29 houses sold to first-time homeowners as part of our revitalization efforts. Most recently, we opened 144 units of affordable housing (“Kate’s Place”) in the heart of Rittenhouse Square to help prevent homelessness. These units currently house 498 individuals and families.

▪ Our Economic Development Program is creating and implementing a strategy that targets the Ridge Avenue Corridor- addressing the need for enhancing the physical environment, improving public safety, strengthening existing businesses and attracting new businesses.

Opportunities for Employment

▪ We maintain two businesses that provide employment opportunities and training for formerly homeless persons: The Back Home Café and Catering and Our Daily Threads Thrift Store.
▪ Our Adult Learning Programs at 1523 Fairmount and the Honickman Learning Center and Comcast Technology Labs provide workforce development to formerly homeless residents and community members.

Medical Care

▪ We serve children and adults through our Community Health Initiative, a program that provides community-based, high quality health care and health education services to the St. Elizabeth’s/Diamond Street neighborhoods of North Philadelphia.
▪ We link over 90% of our residents annually to Health Care Services, whether through our own services or through partnerships and collaboration with local health care providers.

Education

▪ In 2004, we opened the doors to The Honickman Learning Center and Comcast Technology Labs, a state-of-the-art, 38,000 square foot technology center in North Central Philadelphia. The Center provides critically-needed educational and workforce development opportunities for neighborhood children and their families.
▪ Through our College Access Program, we provide college counseling workshops and organize visits to area colleges and universities for interested students, as well as their parents.

In the past five years, Project H.O.M.E. has been nationally recognized for our work, including being acknowledged by the National Alliance to End Homelessness, the National Law Center on Homeless and Poverty, the Ford Foundation and the US Department of Housing and Urban Development. Project H.O.M.E. has also been recognized as a national model by The San Francisco Chronicle (2004), The Denver Post (2004) and The New York Times (2003).
