Bethesda Project Shelter Plus Care

Bethesda Project is a faith-based organization that provides 18 units of permanent housing to homeless individuals dealing with substance abuse, mental illness, or other disabilities. Bethesda Project’s own organization makes referrals.

All of the shelter plus care units are single-bedroom and designed for an individual adult. Housing units are scattered through the city and are inspected every year to make sure they are up to code. Residents contribute 30% of their income to rent, although this can be reduced if a resident’s income increases above certain levels. Bethesda is a Sponsor-based Rental Assistance program, so residents live in facilities owned or leased by Bethesda.

After entering Bethesda, an initial service plan is drawn up to address residents’ particular needs, and reviewed every quarter. Some services are available through Bethesda and others come from outside sources. These services include volunteer outreach, case management, substance abuse treatment, HIV/AIDS medical diagnostic services, mental health supportive services, transportation, meals, and clothing.
