Congreso de Latinos Unidos is a community-based, nonprofit organization dedicated to strengthening Latino communities by providing social, economic, and education leadership development; health services; and advocacy.
Congreso began in 1977 as a volunteer organization that provided the community with drug and alcohol counseling and information. Since then, the Latino population in Philadelphia has increased by 45%, with many Latino residents now facing possible homelessness due to poverty, unemployment, community/domestic violence, and/or low education attainment.
To prevent homelessness, Congreso operates more than 60 interconnected, bilingual programs designed to provide struggling families with the skills and services needed for self-sufficiency. Congreso's Housing Program assists families with children and/or families that have experienced domestic violence with securing permanent housing. Congreso also provides families with financial assistance and connection to educational opportunities.
