SELF Transitional Housing Services

The SELF Transitional Housing Services (THS) is part of the nonprofit SELF, Inc. It provides transitional housing for ten single men and ten single women in North Philadelphia. The Office of Supportive Housing makes referrals.

Like all of SELF’s programs, THS strives to create a supportive atmosphere through the creation of a Peer Culture. House Monitors are elected from the resident population and paid to help new residents, lead community-building exercises, and generally provide a good example to other residents. Every week there is a community meeting where residents can express their feelings about life in transitional housing.

Case managers offer on-site counseling and life skills classes. These classes cover topics including appropriate communication, interpersonal relations, problem-solving, time management, budgeting, consumer education, housekeeping, nutrition and food preparation, health maintenance, and community familiarization. Every week there is a Relapse Prevention group meeting for residents recovering from substance abuse

An emergency fund and the Food Bank offer help with food. Nutrition classes are offered on-site by the Albert Einstein Healthcare Network’s A Better Start program, and staff members help residents shop and prepare food.

Additional services are available through off-site community groups. Off-site partner groups offer health care, mental health problems, substance abuse programs, job training, parenting help, HIV/AIDS care, transgender counseling, veteran’s services, and literacy programs.
