Perkins Boarding Home is a for-profit shelter that serves 16 men and 19 women at its North Philadelphia location. The Office of Supportive Housing makes referrals for men at 1360 Ridge Avenue and for women at 141 N. Juniper St.
Perkins provides food, shelter, and access to off-site services. Many residents travel independently to outside programs, but staff assistance is available. Partnering with outside groups helps Perkins assist residents in procuring identification, receiving social services, getting medical and mental health treatment, attending drug and alcohol rehab, and finding employment.
Stressing socialization and community building, Perkins organizes many group events for residents. The staff plans barbecues, birthday and holiday parties, and off-site trips to help residents feel at home. Outside organizations hold regular lectures and meetings that address issues like homelessness, minority and women issues, voting rights, and drug and alcohol abuse. Volunteers of America, Women's Community Revitalization Project, Habitat for Humanity, Dignity Housing Program and others have all hosted events at Perkins.
