The Depaul Group was initially established in London in 1989 at the initiative of the late Cardinal Basil Hume, Archbishop of Westminster. It was a response to the growing numbers of homeless people sleeping on the streets of London. Its founding trustees were drawn from those religious and lay organizations who followed the teachings of Vincent de Paul, who was one of the great social reformers of 17th century France.
Over the past 20 years Depaul has grown from that small beginning into an international group of non-profits operating across Western and Eastern Europe working with thousands of homeless and disadvantaged people.
Depaul USA was established in 2008 as the latest subsidiary of the Depaul International Group. It continues to have strong links with those organizations inspired by Vincent de Paul such as the Congregation of the Mission, the Daughters of Charity, and the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. However, our staff and clients are drawn from all walks of life, other faiths, or no faith at all. It is non-judgmental in the same way Vincent de Paul was non-judgmental. Our focus is on innovation and action.
