Bethesda Project

WHAT WE DO

Since 1979, Bethesda Project has responded to the spiritual call to serve the homeless. We are a premier provider of housing and services to the chronically homeless in Philadelphia, with a specific commitment to caring for single adults who have been relegated to the margins of an increasingly complex and competitive society.

At our six residences and five shelter settings throughout the heart of Philadelphia, we create and maintain fellowships among an extended family of guests, residents, staff, volunteers and supporters, all of whose lives are enriched by their Bethesda Project experiences. They come together as members of one family in an environment where all can flourish.

We know that the journey from homelessness to self-sufficiency can be long and rocky and that no two people will get there in the same way. So, we operate our facilities and programs along a continuum of care that offers resources and opportunities at different levels and diverse forms. Our residents’ and guests’ goals may differ, but they have in common a keen desire for self-worth and stability. And Bethesda Project is at their side all along the way.

We make good on our commitment to quality care in two ways. First, we seek out and maintain a staff unique in their compassion, experience and skills. Second, we use our financial resources to support state-of-the-art programs and best practices in our field. We keep our promise to guests, residents, staff, volunteers and supporters through effective stewardship of resources and disciplined planning for future growth.

HOW WE DO IT

Affordable Housing
Residents get private, single rooms and supportive services in safe and secure settings in exchange for modest rent or fees.
Shelter
At Our Brothers’ Place and our three church-based shelters, men get a place to sleep, meals, clothing and access to day programs.
Case Management
Case managers work with residents to create individualized Care Plans that aim at short- and long-term goals and map the road to success.
Community Life
Through our rich program of recreation, cultural activities, holiday celebrations, spiritual reflection and civic projects, Bethesda family members build relationships with each other, their neighbors and our city.
Volunteers
Individuals, churches, schools and civic and professional groups give us time, resources and energy. Serving a meal, painting a kitchen, planting a garden, celebrating a birthday or offering a sympathetic ear— our volunteers are the heart and soul of our family.
Resources for Skills Development
We offer training in personal financial management, literacy, nutrition, health and hygiene. Our jobs program, Ready To Work, offers job readiness assessment, placement and retention supports. Men at Our Brothers’ Place use our state-of-the-art computer lab.
Partnerships
We make referrals to local agencies for drug and alcohol counseling, healthcare and mental health assessment, and work closely with practitioners and policy makers at city, regional and national levels to advocate for the homeless.
